Prescription of Mobility and Transfer Aids

Mobility Aids

Mobility aids are a great way to assist older people in maintaining their independence, increasing their walking capacity and improving safety when ambulating. Mobility aids are often prescribed after surgery, after an acute illness or neurological event such as a stroke, for declining mobility and balance or if the person is experiencing falls. Mobility aids may be used for a short period of time whilst the person works to regain their mobility and confidence, or longer-term to assist with independence and safety.

There are many different mobility aids available for older adults.

These range from low levels of assistance, such as walking stick, to increased levels of assistance such as a four-wheel frame or a forearm support frame. Mobility aids are used to increase a persons-base of support. If we can create a wider base of support, the person is generally more stable.

As required, a Guide Healthcare physiotherapist will provide options and give a choice as to what mobility aids are available and appropriate for each client. They will then assist in finding and purchasing the chosen mobility aid based on the client’s needs.

It’s important that mobility aids are adjusted correctly for each person. Our home care physiotherapists are experts at equipment prescription and will work with the client to ensure that the aid is in good working order and adjusted to the resident’s size and preference.

Transfer Aids

Supporting older adults to stay at home can sometimes mean exploring different equipment options to assist with mobility and transfers. Whilst our physiotherapy services are always focused on keeping people ambulant, at times there may be a need for someone to use a transfer aid, either independently or with the support of a family member or carer.

Guide Healthcare home care physiotherapists will complete a review of the person’s physical capacity and their home environment.

They will then work with the client and their support network to prescribe an aid that is most suitable for their needs. There is a range of transfer aids on the market from simple devices which assist people to get in and out of bed or their cars, to mechanical lifting recliner chairs or transfer devices that require the assistance of a carer such as the Sara Stedy.
