Home Care Participants Information

Allied health services can address a wide range of health-related issues and challenges. A multi-disciplinary approach should help you to maintain your independence, be as pain free as possible, stay healthy and live a better quality of life. Allied health professionals work with you to establish goals which are important to you. Your goals may include things like improving your confidence with walking, reducing arthritic pain, improving your ability to complete personal cares, get back into a sport, occupation or activity, better connect with family and friends or return to cooking.

All Guide Healthcare allied health services can be paid for through your home care package. If allied health services are included in your private health insurance, you should be entitled to a rebate following a visit from one of our clinicians. You may also be eligible to access the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) program through Medicare, following a review by your General Practitioner. This program can assist in covering a portion of 5 visits from most allied health professionals.

Our services are designed to fit into your life. Our mobile clinicians are available 5 days per week and will arrange home visit appointment times which are best for you. After your initial consultation, we will communicate re-visits via a method which suits you. This may mean through phone calls, emails, text messages, appointment cards or by writing on your calendar at home. Your Guide Healthcare clinician will modify the frequency of their visits based on your goals and needs. This will be modified from time to time based on your feedback and how you are progressing.

If you would like to learn more about our home care allied health services, you can request for us to contact you and one of our friendly team members will be in touch very soon.

Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality & Safety

According to the Commissioners, many people who receive home care services do not have sufficient access to allied health services. The benefits of a multi-disciplinary approach in the promotion of health and wellbeing in older adults are well known. Without allied health support, many older adults are experiencing a preventable functional decline.

In 2018–19, only 2% of total Home Care Package funding was spent on allied health.
A review of consumers accessing Level 4 Home Care Package found that they were using approximately 1% of their total hours of care a fortnight on allied health services.

This is an alarmingly low level of allied health up-take. The Commissioners concluded that a cultural shift needs to occur within the aged care sector, to view allied health services as valuable rather than a burden on funding.
